A rule of grammar: double negatives are a no-no. - Zak Hill Imagine you decide to build a house but don't actually know how to lay one brick on another, build foundations or put on a roof. Do you think this house will ever get built? Communicating in English is very much the same. Without knowing the basic principles, the building skills, you will never be successful. Here are a few tips: 1 Learn the essentials. Get an elementary grammar book preferably with test exercises, even though you may be an intermediate learner, and make sure you know the basics of noun usage, articles, word order and verb tenses 2 You must enrich your vocabulary, get a good dictionary and thesaurus, read books for fun as well as education. 3 When you hear or read a word you don't know try and learn it. Look up the meaning, the pronunciation and stress. Use a copy, cover, copy technique for each word. Write it down, cover it so you can't see it, spell it out and then check to see if it is correct. All this will reinforce the memory. 4 Speak and write within your limits. It is better to say or write a simple sentence that can be understood then attempt a complex one that nobody can understand. 5 Finally, don't worry about being perfect. When speaking don't try to be just like a native speaker. Speak clearly and confidently and enjoy communicating! |
